Symptoms
Symptoms of core muscle injuries (often called athletic pubalgia or sports hernia) can vary as there are many variants (see Variants). While core muscle injuries may cause chronic pain, not everyone will experience the same level or type of pain.
Common signs and symptoms include:
• Abdominal/groin pain after an acute injury
• Abdominal/groin pain progressing over weeks, month or even years
• Chest/rib pain
• Pain during and after activity
• Minimal pain at rest
• Unilateral or bilateral pain
• Fleeting pain -- appearing and disappearing on one or two sides
• Pain that moves from abdomen to groin or thigh
• Increased pain or discomfort with exertion such as sprinting, kicking, sidestepping, light or heavy lifting
• Increased pain or discomfort when performing certain maneuvers specific to your athletic activity
• Increased pain or discomfort when coughing, sneezing, or turning over in bed
• Predictable pain (e.g., every time you throw a baseball, it hurts)
• Unpredictable pain (e.g., sometimes when you throw a baseball, it hurts)
• Hindered optimal performance
• Inability to perform daily activities
